Randolph Withers Kirkland, Jr.

Randolph Withers Kirkland, Jr. of Camden, SC, died March 7, 2014. He was born in Camden, SC, September 1, 1920, son of Randolph Withers Kirkland and Louise Richardson Kirkland. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Walker Kirkland; daughters, Mary Richardson Kirkland of Seattle, WA, Lucinda Walker Kirkland of Camden, SC and Fredericka Kirkland Arthur of San Diego, CA. He was predeceased by a son, Randolph Withers Kirkland III; brothers, Joseph Lane Kirkland and Thomas Jefferson Kirkland; and sisters, Mary Kirkland Reynolds and Katherine Kirkland Crockett.
Randolph graduated from Clemson College in 1941 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering, and then entered the General Electric Co. Test Program in Lynn, MA until called up for active duty in the U.S. Army Infantry. He served in the South Pacific ending as Captain and Operations Officer 3rd Battalion 511TH Parachute Infantry. His awards included the Silver Star, Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, Distinguished Unit Citation and Combat Infantry Badge. Upon release from active duty in 1946, he returned to General Electric Co. in Schenectady, NY. He participated in the rebuilding of the steel industries in Italy and France under the Marshall Plan. The remainder of his career with GE was devoted to Metal Rolling Systems design and project management in the U.K., Europe, the Americas and the Far Eat. He also served on the planning commissions of Schenectady and Georgetown SC. Randolph retired from GE as manager of support engineering in the Industrial Control Department in Mebane, NC, retired to Pawley’s Island, Charleston and Hagood before settling at last in Camden. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Hagood, SC. Burial will held at a later date in the family plot in Quaker Cemetery in Camden.
