Billy Silver Obituary

Billy Jack Silver of Camden died on Wednesday, March 13, 2024.  A graveside service at Magnolia Cemetery in Charleston, SC will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at 11:00 AM.

Born in Marshall, North Carolina on August 30, 1932, he was the son of the late William N. Silver and Lucy Rector Silver Prentiss, and stepfather, William E. Prentiss.

Billy moved to Charleston, SC at a very young age and attended Charleston County public schools. He graduated from The Citadel in 1958.  Billy served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

His career in banking spanned over 36 years.  He joined The Citizens and Southern National Bank of South Carolina (Bank of America) in 1959 and held positions in Charleston, Camden, Greenville, and Columbia, and at The National Bank of South Carolina (Synovus).  Billy was Vice President and Marketing Director at both banks.

Billy’s responsibilities included advertising, public relations, stockholder relations, and special events.  He was recognized by a number of national organizations for his achievements in financial marketing by the Bank Marketing Association and received the American Advertising Federation’s Silver Metal Award, the industry’s highest award in ceremonies in Washington, DC.

Active in civic and cultural organizations, he was a historic preservationist protecting properties in Greenville, Columbia, and Camden.  As a descendant of George Silver, he was a member of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. Billy was a member of Springdale Hall Club in Camden, and he was a Methodist.

Billy was predeceased by his mother, father, stepfather, and sister, Toni.  He will be buried alongside them in the family plot.  He is survived by his nephew, William Prentiss Cook of Camden; a cousin, Lynne Rector Mastantuno (Joseph) of Camden; forever friends, Happy Raine Evans of Charleston, Phillip Carter of Ft. Mill, and Carey Burnett of Mt. Pleasant.
