Betty Coombs Obituary

Memorial services for Betty Hanka Coombs, 97, will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at Bethesda Presbyterian Church, 502 E. DeKalb Street, Camden, SC 29020.  Reverend John Hallman will officiate.  A reception will follow in John Knox Hall. Memorial contributions may be made to Bethesda Presbyterian Church, 502 DeKalb Street, Camden, SC 29020 or the Community Medical Clinic of Kershaw County, PO Box 217, Camden, SC 29021.

Betty Hanka Coombs passed away peacefully on November 26 at the age of 97.  Born in Meadville, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Edgar and Lucile Hanka. Betty received her degree from Millersville University and taught physical education for several years before marrying William (Bill) Coombs in 1950.

In 1965 Betty and Bill came to Camden with the DuPont Company and became very involved in community service. They were both active members of Bethesda Presbyterian Church. Betty was the first woman of the church to be elected to the office of elder.  She was the president of the Presbyterian Women’s organization and received the Life Time Service Award. She and Bill were both elected to the honorary position of Elder Emeritus, and they both taught Sunday School classes for over 42 years.

Betty’s contributions to the community went well beyond Bethesda. She was a volunteer with the Hospice organization for many years as well as the Community Medical Clinic of Kershaw County, A New Day on Mill, and Food of the Soul.

Betty was an avid golfer and tennis player, starting both sports at an early age.  She and Bill were longtime members of the Camden Country Club, spending many enjoyable hours with friends on the golf course or tennis court. Her love of tennis kept her on the courts until age 90.  Betty is remembered for her devotion to the game and her genuine friendship and caring spirit as well as a mentor and teacher.

Betty is survived by her daughters, Jane Davis (Kevin) of Annapolis, Maryland, and Anne Mulligan, of Roswell, Georgia; grandchildren Cara Kessler (Mike) and Corry Mulligan (Mary Leslie); great-grandson, Liam Kessler; brother, Gary Hanka (Sandee) and sister-in-law, Elizabeth Yerkes.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Helen L. Coombs, and brother, Robert Hanka.
