Betty Pate Johnson Obituary

Funeral services for Betty Pate Johnson will be held at 12:00 noon on Monday, June 16, 2025, at Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church, 1206 Lyttleton Street, Camden, SC, 29020.  A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at 11:00 AM at the Church Family Life Center.  Memorials may be made to Kershaw County Humane Society, 128 Black River Road, Camden, SC, 29020, or the Arts Center of Kershaw County, 810 Lyttleton Street, Camden, SC 29020.

Betty, wife of the late Hugh Jesse Johnson, Jr., passed away on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.  She was born on November 11, 1929, in Hartsville, SC to the late Maynard and Etta McInvaille Pate. She attended Coker College; she was a retired secretary for the South Carolina Forestry Commission.  Betty was a former bailiff at Kershaw County Courthouse and, volunteer at Kershaw County Medical Center.  She was a former president of VFW Ladies Auxiliary, member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club, and Aimin’High Dance Company.  Betty was a longtime member and Sunday School Teacher at Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Renee J. Thompson (John); granddaughters, Jesseca Camille “Cammy” Thompson (Candace), Laurel T, Simmons (Mike), Jonellen T. Edgerton (EJ), Charleston Hannah  Thompson; great-grandchildren, Bayne Simmons, Finley Simmons, Dru Edgerton, Gunner Edgerton, Hugh Zawadzki Thompson, Liam Zawadzki Thompson, brother, Bobby Pate (Beth), and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Betty's caregiver, Carolyn D. Miller, and MUSC Hospice.
