Beverly Georgette Bowers Maksin

Beverly Georgette Maksin, 84, of Camden, SC passed away on Saturday, October 5, 2024, of congestive heart failure.

Born in Cassatt, SC on June 8, 1940, she was the youngest of eight children of the late Steve and Annie Bowers. The Bowers family was well known in the small community in Kershaw County for always providing a helping hand.

Nicknamed Bay, she graduated from Midway High School, married John Maksin, Jr., had three children, and settled in nearby Florence, SC. While raising her kids, she became a licensed practical nurse. After her marriage ended in divorce, she obtained her Registered Nurse diploma. Always full of adventure, she signed up to be a traveling nurse in an effort to see the country. When her travel assignment in Las Vegas, NV ended, she decided to live there full-time. The setting was perfect for her. She had flaming red hair and was always flamboyantly dressed.

After a few years, she returned to South Carolina to be closer to her family. Always a nurse, she will be known for taking care of many ailing friends and family.

Beverly loved eating crab legs, decorating for Christmas, going to garage sales, and could play Bible hymns by ear on the piano.  She attended First Baptist Church and was a member of the Silvertones, the senior choir.

The family wishes to thank the outstanding staff at Karesh at Beechwood in Camden, SC for their devotion to Beverly during her stay there.

She is survived by her daughters Sherri, of Decatur, Ga., Renee Maksin Shannon, of Camden, SC, brother Joseph Bowers, of Kershaw, SC and sister Catherine Hobek, of Columbia, SC, five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. 

She is predeceased by her son, Don Christian.

Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel, at 1112 Fair St. is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 10, 2024, from 6pm - 7:30pm at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel. Funeral services will be Friday, October 11, 2024, at 2:00 pm at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel, with internment immediately following in Cassatt Baptist Church cemetery in Cassatt, SC.
