Boyd Black Obituary

Memorial services for Boyd Cecil Black, will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, February 28, 2025 at Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church, 1206 Lyttleton Street, Camden. Paul Wood will officiate.  Visitation will follow in the Family Life Center. Memorials may be made to Kershaw County Arts Center, 810 Lyttleton Street, Camden, SC 29020; Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church, 1206 Lyttleton Street, Camden, SC 29020; or Symphony League Endowment, Rebecca Faulk, Treasurer, 503 St. James Street, Columbia, SC 29205-3069.

Boyd, son of the late Ray Gideon Black and Elizabeth Yount Black, passed away on Tuesday, February 25, 2025.   He was the husband of Cheryl Gregory Black.

In addition to his wife of 54 years, Boyd is survived by his sisters-in-law, Beverly Hamilton (Gordon) of Columbia, Susan Holspberg Gregory of Union, and Mary Black of Jacksonville, FL; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Other than his parents, Boyd was predeceased by his brothers, Donald Raymond Black and Kendrick O’Neal Black; sister-in-law, Mary Turner Black; and brother-in-law, Wayne Emerson Gregory.

Boyd will be remembered for his love of music as a trumpeter in Camden Community Band and for his support and work with the SC Philharmonic Society and for being an avid Gamecocks sports fan.  Boyd especially enjoyed international travel and spending time in the scenic NC mountains for the summer music festivals in Brevard.  After retirement from the University of SC, he worked as an independent tax accountant and devoted numerous hours to the Camden community and his church.
