Carole Adelle Sjogren, aged 88, of Elgin, SC, passed away Monday, December 11, 2023. Born on Christmas Eve (1934) in Providence, RI, she was the daughter of Alton Taylor Leonard and Ina Matilda Svenson Leonard. She was married to the late James Edwin Sjogren for 62 years. Carole graduated from Central High School in 1953 and worked as an international telephone operator. She was also a proud Navy housewife for 20 years, while raising her four children.
Carole loved her life with her husband and where their travels took them during his Naval career. No place held as much fondness for her as Key West, FL. She loved the salty air and delicious seafood of the Gulf Coast and as such, they spent more than 20 years of their retirement on the Gulf in Alabama.
Carole’s family was her reason for being. Matriarch and beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt and grandmother, her joy was found in her family. A close second, was sitting across a backgammon board with one of those beloved family members, wiping the floor with them, in a game of Acey-Deucey. If you were blessed to play a game with her, and win, you were in rare company.
Those who knew Carole best, remember her for her diligent record keeping. More than that, she preserved a lifetime of memories, through letters, keepsakes, and mementos from her life and travels, blessing her family with treasures both physical and ethereal.
Carole’s faith was her strength. A lifetime believer in Jesus, she taught Sunday School for many years, sang in the church choir, and spent her life as a devoted Christ follower, living as an example to her family. She is certainly singing now.
A memorial service with interment will be held at a later date, to be determined, at Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery. A visitation (drop-in) will be held at her home in Elgin, SC from 3:00-8:00 p.m., on Monday, December 18th. Memorials may be made in Carole A. Sjogren’s name to the American Cancer Society.
Carole is survived by her three children Deborah L. Marsh (Stan) of Everett, WA, James M. Sjogren of Indianapolis, IN, and Carl A. Sjogren (Sue) of North Kingston, RI; five grandchildren Andy C. Derscheid, Jillian L. Derscheid, Michelle D. Baughman, Jennifer M. Griggs, and Andrea L. Baker; and thirteen great-grandchildren. She is survived by her sister Nancy I. Yuettner (Cliff) of Warwick, RI and brother-in-law Bill R. Fairweather of Silver Spring, MD.
In addition to her beloved husband, Carole was predeceased by her sister Elaine A. Fairweather, her daughter Laurie A. Larrivee, and granddaughter Erica D. Thoburn.
The family wishes to express special thanks to the dedicated care team members from Medical Services of America and Comfort Keepers.
