Debra “Debi” Arlene Langley Kennedy, 70, daughter of Frances Stanford Langley and the late Thomas Alvin Langley, peacefully passed away on Monday, May 11, 2026. She was the widow of Paul Watson Kennedy, Sr.
Born in Camden, Debi graduated from Camden High School in 1973. As a teenager, she enjoyed twirling the baton for CHS and taught baton classes at the YMCA. She ultimately pursued a career in computer programming and specialized in public accounting software. Her determination and independent spirit led her to a successful career at a time when few women were part of the field. She also served in the SC Air National Guard.
Debi encouraged her daughters to spread their wings and seize whatever opportunities life offered them. She loved to travel, with Jamaica holding a special place in her heart. She had a lifelong passion for politics and participated in many community activities. Although Debi faced health challenges of her own, she was steadfast in taking care of her husband Paul during his long battle with lung cancer.
In addition to her mother, of Columbia, SC, Debi is survived by her daughters, Chelsea Shamsedin Araujo (William) of Orlando, FL and Nadia Shamsedin of Brooklyn, NY. Debi is also survived by her stepson, Paul Kennedy Jr and step granddaughter, Isabelle Kennedy of Texas. Debi is survived by sisters, Valerie Abbott (Tom) of Sumter, SC, Aline Stevenson of Hastings, NE, and Donna Arndt (Vance) of Prosperity, SC and brother-in-law, Casey Covell of Waynesville, NC. In addition to her father, she was predeceased by her youngest sister, Dixie Covell.
A private Celebration of Life will be held for the family on May 28, 2026.
Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel, is assisting the family.
