Elizabeth Wooten Obituary

Elizabeth “Ridie” Haile Mustard Wooten of Boykin, SC died Tuesday, April 27, 2021 in Camden, SC. Funeral services will be private. Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice. The family will receive friends at a reception (casual attire) on Friday, April 30, 2021 at 2:00 PM, at the home of Mrs. Wooten’s grandson, Tommy Marshall, 2309 Carter Street, Camden, SC.

Mrs. Wooten was predeceased by her husband Thomas Jones Wooten. She was born May 12, 1920 in Charleston, SC, the daughter of Harry Stoll Mustard, M.D. of Charleston and Sarah Hopkins Haile Mustard of Boykin. She attended Bryn Mawr in Baltimore, MD.

From the time of her marriage in 1937 her primary residence was in Boykin and she became an integral member of the community. Mrs. Wooten and her family cultivated and hunted land inherited from her Boykin ancestors who acquired it in the 1700’s.

She became a scholar through her passion for reading and in-depth exploration regarding subjects that intrigued her. One of her primary interests was the heritage of the Wateree Swamp. She spent many years combing the lowlands of the swamp, fields in the Boykin community, and other places finding and identifying Indian and other artifacts, some of which she donated to the University of South Carolina Archeology Department.

Mrs. Wooten was a sportswoman, following the tradition of her female Boykin ancestors who liked to hunt and fish along with their male relatives. She and her husband spent much time at Edisto Beach and were among the first sports fishermen to fish the Gulf Stream off the coast of South Carolina. She was a past treasurer of the Friends of the Kershaw County Library, served on the board of Swift Creek Church and was an honorary member of The Boykin Hunting Club.

Mrs. Wooten is survived by her children, Elizabeth W. (Pudn) Cantey of Camden, Thomas J. Wooten, Jr. (Pam) of Beaufort, Caroline W. Lindler (Bill) of Boykin, and Frank M. Wooten (Daphne) of Camden; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her son, Alan Wooten; brother, Harry Stoll Mustard, Jr., M.D.; and her sister, Mary Boykin Mustard DuVal.
