Born in Rockingham, NC, Gay was the daughter of the late William Saunders Love and Lydia Gay Biggs Love. She was the widow of John Walter Conder, III. Gay passed away on Sunday, March 29, 2026.
She was a devoted and loving mother to her five children and a cherished grandmother to all of her grandchildren, giving her time, love, and care to every member of her family. Her home and her heart were always open and her family was the center of her world.
She cherished her many dear friends and loved her community deeply. Whether it was Tuesday gatherings with her beloved bridge club, spirited matches in rectory square with her tennis group, or traveling with her Converse College friends who remained close throughout her many years, she treasured every connection. She delighted in going out for dinner with her friends at Springdale Hall, where laughter and good conversation flowed as freely as the wine.
She loved to travel and found special joy in being at the beach with her family or a group of dear friends where she relished soaking up the sun and walking barefoot by the ocean. She also adored her many dogs throughout her life, whose unconditional love brought her constant comfort and joy.
With her sunny personality, warm infectious smile, and beautiful blue eyes, she had a gift for making everyone around her feel welcome. People simply loved being in her company- she had a calming, comforting presence and a witty sense of humor.
Her warmth, her kindness, and her unwavering devotion to family will be remembered and deeply missed by all who knew her and loved her “back in the day” when she was herself.
Gay is survived by her children, John Walter Conder IV (Myra) of Camden, Lydia Conder Vann (John) of Menlo Park, CA, R. Justin Conder (Anne) of Camden, Joseph Hemby Conder (Heather) of Camden, and Joanna Conder Heaton (Chuck) of Columbia; grandchildren, Emily, John Walter, Will, Reid, Lydia, J.D, Gil, Anna, Lizzie, Gregory, Gus and Willis; step-grandchild, Katie; great-grandchild, Greta; and step-great-grandchild, Mary Reese.
In addition to her parents and husband, Gay was predeceased by her brothers, Billy Love and Biggs Love.
