Jean Fowler Obituary

Graveside funeral services for Jean McLain Fowler, 95, will be held at 2:30 PM on Sunday, November 17, 2024, at Quaker Cemetery, 713 Meeting Street, Camden, SC 29020.  Bishop Gary Rivas will officiate.

Jean passed away on November 13, 2024.  She was born on December 5, 1928, to the late John J. and Lena Smith McLain. She was a longtime co-owner and manager of Walgreens in Camden, where she had a policy of making free deliveries to customers long before other pharmacies offered such services. She was a member of Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Friendly Inquirers Sunday School class, served on the Bereavement Committee, and was an Offering Steward.

Jean loved and was much loved by her family and many friends. She enjoyed entertaining and was known as a wonderful hostess.  Jean had great fortitude, near limitless energy and thrived on yard work.  She also loved traveling with her sisters and brothers-in-law.  Jean exercised every day faithfully almost her entire life and was a dedicated caregiver and an inspiration to all who knew her.

Jean is survived by her sons, Sam B. Fowler, Jr. (Elaine), and D. Randy Fowler; grandchildren, Ross Fowler (Lauren), Jason Fowler (Lauren), Rachel Fowler, and Harrison Fowler; and great-grandchildren, Gray and George Fowler; and Molly her loving canine companion.

Other than her parents, Jean was predeceased by her first husband, Sam B. Fowler, Sr., and second husband, Foy C. Thompson; daughters, Vicki Fowler and Theresa Fowler; and sisters, Phyllis Mathis, Mert Lemire, Ebb Thompson and Margaret Branham; brothers, Jack McLain and Bob McLain.

Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to Thiel Myer Animal Shelter, 128 Black River Road, Camden, SC, 29020, or http://kchumanesociety.org.

The family would like to express its deepest appreciation for the loving, compassionate care provided by Jean’s caregivers:  Erma Clyburn, Doris Martin, Jean Dabney, Joan Ward, and Mamie Dennis, as well as by the doctors and other staff of MUSC Health Kershaw Medical Center and Hospice team.
