Jean Carroll Holland, 82, of Camden died December 18 after a long battle with cancer. Born December 17, 1939 in Sumter, SC, Mrs. Holland was the daughter of the late Joseph Allen Carroll and Grace Dudley Carroll. She was a teacher for the Kershaw County School District and taught 6th grade English at Camden Middle School for over 30 years. She was well known for her innovative teaching methods, was a mentor to many teachers, and was awarded Teacher of the Year. In retirement, she continued to serve others by volunteering at the Community Medical Clinic of Kershaw County and at Second Look thrift shop. A devout Christian, Mrs. Holland was a long-time member of the Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Holland graduated from Gaffney High School in 1958 where she was Miss Cherokeean and a majorette in the marching band. She went on to earn a B.A. in Art Education from the University of South Carolina where she was one of the original members of the Carolina Coquettes and a member of Phi Beta Pi sorority. She later earned a Master’s in Education from Francis Marion University.
She is survived by three children: K. Lamar Holland, Jr. of Camden; Amy Holland of Richmond, VA; and Elizabeth Holland of Venice, FL. She is also survived by her brother, Allen Carroll of Lilburn, GA and four grandchildren: Kirk Holland, Bryce Farley, Paul Farley, and Phoenix Holland.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 27 at the Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church to be followed by a ceremony in the Scattering Garden after which there will be a celebration and celebratory performance of her signature, "The Verb Boogie.” The family welcomes all of her former students to participate.
