A memorial service to celebrate the life of Jean Frances Coleman Hawkins, 99, will be held at a later date. She will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery beside her late husband, George Wesley Hawkins, Jr., who was a World War II veteran, a decorated Fighter Pilot, and a German POW survivor.
Jean died on Friday, December 15, 2023. She was born in Washington, DC to the late Robert G. Coleman and Thelma Gibbons Coleman. Jean served her country during World War II as a civilian employee in the Army’s War Mapping Department in Washington DC. She later transitioned into a nursing career working as a Surgical Technician at Arlington Hospital.
Jean is survived by her son-in-law, Derek H. Stanley of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, Stuart Stanley Cawthon of Matthews, NC and Derek Hunt Stanley, Jr. of Alpharetta, GA; and great-grandchild, Kenneth Ray Cawthon, Jr. of Matthews, NC.
In addition to her parents and husband, Jean was predeceased by her children, Wendy Gaile Hawkins, Robin Hawkins Stanley, and Geroge Wesley Hawkins, III
Jean was a member of Grace Church, Camden and sang in the church choir. Memorials may be made to Grace Episcopal Church, 1315 Lyttleton Street, Camden, SC 29020.
