Joyce Carlton Obituary

Joyce Marie Parker Carlton (better known as Gan by all of those who loved her) age 91 of Camden, SC, passed away peacefully on August 29, 2022, just a month shy of her 92nd birthday. She arrived as the third of four children to the late Farrell Lucas Parker and Elah Dupree McCaskill Parker of Camden. She graduated from Camden High School where she met the love of her life, George Edward Carlton. They were happily married for 27 years until his death in 1977. Together they made a happy home in Camden with their four children. Joyce had a strong passion for her family, church, friends, community and country. After the passing of her husband, she furthered her education and graduated from the University of South Carolina. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Camden, serving as a Sunday school teacher, training union teacher, GA teacher, and a member of other committees. Joyce was an officer of the Business Professional Womens Club, member of the Pilot Club, and a dedicated member of the Republican Party. She was also active in the Kershaw County United Way and served as President of the Board and Campaign Chairman. Her greatest joy was time spent with family. She never missed a graduation, birthday party, ball game, or a chance to hold one of her grandchildren or great-grandchildren. Joyce also loved to spend time visiting with dear friends, whether it was going for a walk, playing bridge or sitting on her porch talking. Her heart was always filled after time spent with them. Joyce was known for her passionate work ethic. Her last years were spent caring for those at the Kershaw County Adult Day Care Center. She loved them all so deeply, and they each carried a special place in her heart.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband George, her brother Farrell Leroy Parker, her sister Sulina Parker Prather, son-in-law Phillip Edward Hudson Sr, and great-grandson Thomas Wesley Hudson.

She is survived by her daughters, Robbie Carlton Hudson of Camden and Donna Carlton Bowen (Jim) of Jacksonville, FL; sons, John Farrell Carlton (Tracy) of Columbia and Henry Paige Carlton (Julie) of Columbia; sister Pamelah Parker Byrd (Deans) of Dalzell, SC; eight grandchildren, Erin Brackney (Jon), Phillip Hudson (Stephanie), Georgia Altus (Jared), Becca Carlton, Lucas Carlton, Schroder Carlton, Mills Carlton (Megan), and Parker Carlton. She was also blessed to enjoy six great-grandchildren, Molly Hudson, Deklan Brackney, Hill Hudson, Graham Hudson, Woods Altus and Ella Carlton.

The family sends its deepest gratitude to the caregivers at Pinedale Residential and to all of the members of her church and community for the outpouring of love.
