Memorial services for James Laurin Cooper, Jr. will be held at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, November 5, 2025 at Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church, 1206 Lyttleton Street, Camden, SC 29020. Bishop Gary Rivas and Chris Campbell will officiate. A reception will be held in the Family Life Center after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church.
Laurin was born in Mayesville, SC to the late Bertha T. and Laurin Cooper, Sr. He graduated from Camden High School where he lettered in 3 sports, and he was All State in basketball. He was a graduate of The University of South Carolina, with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Laurin was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He worked for DuPont in Camden for 39 years before retiring.
He coached Dixie youth baseball for 14 years as well as the Methodist Church team, and was the first recipient of the Percy Mays Award for his volunteer work for youth in sports. Laurin was also an avid tennis player. He was a real sportsman, and he loved to hunt.
Laurin was a member of Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church for over 75 years. He was a Sunday School teacher and board member, continuing his faith after moving to the Methodist Oaks in Orangeburg in 2002. He was also a veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy.
Laurin was married to the love of his life, Caroyln, for 63 years. Carolyn died in 2010.
He is survived by his daughters, Linda Cooper Mundy of Raleigh, NC and Nancy Cooper Campbell of Hilton Head Island, SC; grandchildren, Chris Campbell (Brittany) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Laurin McGee and Brandi Carroll, both of Raleigh; and six great-grandchildren, Rhett and Liza Campbell, Berkley and Canler Carroll, and Grayson and Jaryn Sauls.
In addition to his wife and parents, Laurin was predeceased by his sister, Ruth Cooper Stabler.
