Margaret Hawkins Obituary

Funeral Services to celebrate the life of Margaret Elizabeth Driggers Hawkins, 98, will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, December 1, 2024, at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel.  The family will receive friends from 1 – 2:00 PM one hour prior to the service.  Memorials may be made to Epworth Children’s Home, 2900 Millwood Avenue, Columbia, SC 29205.

Margaret passed away on November 23, 2024, in Camden, South Carolina. She was the widow of Allie Jack Hawkins. She was born on January 5, 1926, in Darlington, South Carolina. Her parents were Robert Driggers and Mae Belle Kirven Driggers, and her sister was Louise Smiley. She graduated from St. John’s High School in Darlington.

Margaret is survived by son, Dexter Hawkins (Susan) of Piedmont, South Carolina; daughters, Phyllis Schultz of Lugoff, and Suzanne Hawkins Duff (David) of Columbia; grandchildren Paul Schultz (Meghan) of Columbia, and Lance Schultz (Fiona Martin) of Argyll, Scotland.

After marrying during World War II and a stint in Kansas for the Army Air Corps, Jack and Margaret spent most of their lives in Lugoff, South Carolina after moving there in the late 1940’s when Dupont plant opened. She was a founding member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Lugoff, and for as long as she was able, she was very active with United Methodist Women, was the Director of Worship, and a member of the Golden Hearts Club for more than 40 years.

Margaret was a highly skilled cook and baker, and volunteered as a substitute in the Lugoff Elgin High School cafeteria, which was run by her dear friend Virginia Smith. Her cakes were highly sought after, especially at Christmas time. She cooked and baked by instinct as much as by any recipe, and the result was always delicious. When there was a cake cooling on the counter, anyone in the household would be wise to inquire before tasting it–it was probably for the church.

She enthusiastically participated in visiting and keeping in touch with the “shut-ins” of the church, and visiting and collecting donations for various Methodist charities and facilities.

Margaret was an avid Clemson fan, especially for football, just as the rest of the family. She and Jack had season tickets for decades, and she attended games with Dexter, Phyllis, Susan, and occasionally Suzanne, until 2019. Even after, until very recently, she still watched games and followed recruiting.

Until her mid 90s, Margaret was very active, participating in water aerobics, attending church, driving, going on Golden Hearts outings, and enjoying weekly lunches and dinners with her friends.

Margaret was predeceased by her parents, her sister Louise, her husband Jack, her daughter Cynthia Diana Hawkins, and her great-granddaughter Lainey Schultz.

The family expresses a special thanks to the staff at Karesh at Beechwood for taking such good care of Margaret for four years. Ever the social butterfly, she enjoyed her time at Karesh and the activities and other residents.

Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
