Mark Francis Leonard Obituary

Mark Francis Leonard, 59, of Camden, South Carolina, passed away peacefully at home on April 13, 2026.

Born November 22, 1966, in Jersey City, New Jersey, he was the son of Francis James (Frank) Leonard and Helga Mirium (née Gossman) Leonard. He was raised in Fairfield and educated in the Fairfield public schools before attending Seton Hall Preparatory School in West Orange, New Jersey, where he was a member of the school's swim team. Mark went on to study history at Fairfield University and later earned an MBA from Rutgers University.

Mark’s career included roles as a workers’ compensation underwriter with AIG, an appraiser with C.T. Peters Appraisers in Red Bank, New Jersey, and a sales associate at ShopRite in Stirling, New Jersey. After relocating to Camden for retirement, he became an active volunteer with The Friends of Kershaw County Library. He established and managed an eBay site to sell vintage and rare books on the organization’s behalf and regularly assisted with the annual fall book sale.

A lifelong reader with a particular love of history, Mark also developed a passion for genealogy and took pride in tracing his family lineage back to the Mayflower. He enjoyed travel, time spent with family and friends, and the companionship of his cat, Finn. He was a devoted husband, son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend.

Mark is survived by his wife, Susan Leonard; his parents, Frank and Helga Leonard; his sisters Alison Schlein (Jon) and Catherine Gustavsen (Paul); nieces Abigail, Melissa, Annie, and Erica; his aunt and uncle Robert and Mary Leonard; and cousins Lauren Alarez, Karen Marden, and Jennifer VanderVeen and their families.

A private Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.
