A service to celebrate the life of Reverend  Dr. James D. Jordan, Jr., will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, February 25, 2024 at Bethesda Presbyterian Church, 502 E. DeKalb Street, Camden, SC.

A private burial service will be held at 2:00 PM at Lugoff First Baptist Cemetery.  Reverend John Hallman and Reverend Dr. Mike Kelly will officiate.  Visitation with the family will be held at the conclusion of the service at Westminster Hall. 

Dr. Jordan was born in Charleston, SC to the late James D. Jordan and Alma Livingston Jordan.  He graduated from St. Andrews Parish High School before matriculating at Furman University where he graduated summa cum laude.  Dr. Jordan was named a Fulbright Scholar and studied at the Sorbonne and University of Strasbourg, France.  After his return from France, he earned his theological degree at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary before completing his Ph.D. at Duke University.

His academic professional life included professorial positions at Emory-Oxford College, Mars Hill College, and Georgia Southern University.  While at Georgia Southern, he also served as head of the history department and received the Outstanding Professor award.  Dr. Jordan then went on to become president at North Greenville College and then at Shorter College.

In his ministerial career, he served as pastor and interim pastor at churches in Georgia, North and South Carolina.  Dr. Jordan was a powerful and inspirational speaker who motivated his students and guided his congregations with an unsurpassed level of pastoral care.

Surviving Dr. Jordan is his wife of sixty-eight years, Barbara Watts Jordan; his children, Jean Jordan Misiewicz (Victor), and James “Jay” Jordan (Jackie), and his siblings, Eunice Jordan Leaird and John Lawrence “Larry” Jordan (Dorn).

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethesda Presbyterian Church or the charity of your choice.
