Richard Hagins Obituary

Richard Stilton Hagins, 83, husband of the late Sara Mangum Hagins, passed away on Friday, November 21, 2025. He was born in Lancaster, SC, the son of the late Samuel Everett Hagins and Sadie Elizabeth Hammond Hagins. In high school, he was an outstanding student and earned his Eagle Scout rank. After attending Clemson University on an Army ROTC scholarship, Richard graduated with honors, married his high school sweetheart, and they moved to New Mexico where he earned a master’s degree. During Army service overseas, he obtained the rank of Captain. He was employed by DuPont as a mechanical engineer until retirement.

Richard spent many years as a scout leader, choir member, youth volunteer, and church trustee. He and Sara began the Weatherization and Repairs Ministry (WARM) as well as Wateree Salkehatchie Summer Service, improving homes for hundreds of residents while teaching thousands of youth valuable building skills. His life was a great example of generosity and compassion. He loved Clemson football, building furniture, solving problems, gardening, and spending time with his family.

Richard is survived by his daughters, Susan White (Fred) of Camden, Ann Brown (Alan) of Charleston, Julie Esmacher (Russ) of Greer, and Laura Kendrick (Cliff) of Greer. He was most proud of his grandchildren: Richard White (Maddie), Katie White, Sam White, Will Esmacher, Mary Kendrick, Sara Esmacher, Neil Brown, James Kendrick, Gibson Esmacher, Sally Brown, Julia Kendrick, and he recently welcomed his first great-granddaughter, Nora White. Richard was predeceased by brothers, William E. Hagins, Cecil F. Hagins, James H. Hagins, and Samuel L. Hagins; sisters, Mary H. Plyler, Julia E. Hagins, and Doris H. Cauthen.
