Dr. Robert James “Jim” Roquemore, Jr., died on Thursday, November 23, 2023, at the Columbia Presbyterian Community, Lexington, SC. A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held at Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Camden, SC on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at 2:00 PM. Rev. Dr. Mike Kelly, Rev. Brent Kendall, and Rev. Dr. David Roquemore will officiate. The family will greet friends in John Knox Hall at the church after the service. A private family interment will be held in Quaker Cemetery.
He was born May 7, 1933, in Hemingway, SC, the elder son of Robert James and Lucille Cannon Roquemore. He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1955. In 1974, he received a Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina as a National Defense Education Fellow.
He served in the U.S. Air Force as a fighter-interceptor pilot, flying F-86L aircraft for the 444th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, stationed at Charleston Air Force Base.
Dr. Roquemore served the school systems of Charleston County in McClellanville, Mt. Pleasant, and Sullivan’s Island. He served as assistant superintendent of the School District of Pickens County, as superintendent of Dillon School District Two and of Edison Local School District in Jefferson County, Ohio.
Dr. Roquemore was a member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Camden. He belonged to Civitan, Kiwanis, and Rotary Clubs. He was a Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Club in Camden.
He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Randall Lafayette Roquemore.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Phoebe Kirton Roquemore, and their children: David Roquemore (Susan), Warren Roquemore (Karen), Anna Roquemore Long, and Margaret Roquemore Hale (John). Also ten grandchildren: Sarah Roquemore (Mark Bober), John Roquemore (Alyssa), Peter Roquemore (Erin), Katie Roquemore (David Gilliam), Emily Roquemore Bodnar (Matt), Lauren Roquemore (JT Rhoades), Madeline Roquemore Stockberger (John), McGowan Long (Ansleigh), Courtney Roquemore, and Caroline Hale. Also two great-grandchildren, with another expected in January 2024.
The family wishes to express special thanks to the dedicated caretakers in Memory Care and Assisted Living in the Presbyterian Community.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Sacks of Love ministry at Bethesda Presbyterian or Samaritan’s Purse.
