Thomas Henry Shumate, III

Thomas Henry Shumate, III, 78, of Camden, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2026, surrounded by his family.

Born on August 11, 1947, in Camden, SC, he was the son of the late Thomas Henry Shumate, Jr., and Ruth Jennings Shumate.  He was preceded in death by his sister, Terry Shumate Campbell.

He lived a life marked by kindness, hard work, and integrity.  To his family, he was a steady source of strength and laughter, and to others he was known for a quick helping hand and as a reliable friend.  He loved spending time outdoors, and some of his happiest moments were spent fishing, hunting, cooking his famous fried turkey and chicken bog, and telling funny stories.

He was a member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church, Wateree Bassmasters, numerous hunting clubs over the years, and a loyal supporter of the Take a Child Fishing Tournament.  Tommy served in the United States Army for four years and was proud of his service.  He owned The Wallpaper Shop with his father for over forty years and hung wallpaper in many homes across the state.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Janet Anderson Shumate; his daughters, Mary Elizabeth Nelson (Brian), of Canton GA, and Sarah Jennings Greenway, of Camden, SC; his grandchildren, Sarah Grace Garrison, Thomas Henry Greenway, Elizabeth Jennings Greenway, and Samuel Harrison Ferguson; his sisters, Nancy Shumate Willson, of  Dataw Island, SC, and Renee Shumate Colvin (Billy), of Camden, SC; his brother-in-law, Malcolm Fletcher Anderson, Jr. (Nancy); his nieces, Kelli Bates, of Sammamish, WA, Aimee Culler, of Mooresville, NC, and Stephanie  Catoe, of Camden, SC; and his nephews, Patrick Anderson, of Charleston, SC, Tyler Anderson, of Monroe, NC, and Tripp Colvin, of Camden, SC.

Graveside memorial services will be held on April 14, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Quaker Cemetery, 713 Meeting Street, Camden, SC.  Reverend Brent Kendall and Reverend Patrick Cherry will officiate.  Visitation will be Monday, April 13, 2026, from 6-7:30 PM at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel.  Memorials may be made to Bethesda Presbyterian Church, 502 E DeKalb Stteet, Camden, SC 29020.
